Investigation covers all aspects of police activity to gather, assess and analyse information to produce evidence. In Policing terms the evidence is mainly used in criminal prosecutions but is also for enquiries and other courts.
Investigation skills comprise a number of generic aspects, whilst some specialist roles require other skills all investigators need to understand the role of evidence and how to gather it, the responsibility of police to uncover the evidence involved in an allegation or issue in a way which complies with the rules of evidence and how this can be used to help others make decisions about crimes and criminality, events and accidents, or other matters which need exploring.
Police officers have considerable powers and responsibilities and these courses will consider the issues of oversight and supervision and how these are important to ensure the legitimacy and credibility of the justice system.
